Nourishing Hope: How Your Donations Fed Families in Rural and Urban Uganda

In sub-Saharan Africa, hunger remains a harsh reality for millions. As of 2025, over 282 million people across the continent—more than one in five—are undernourished, driven by prolonged droughts, economic challenges, and climate shocks (IFRC and FAO reports). In the 2025 Global Hunger Index, Uganda ranks 87th out of 123 countries with sufficient data to calculate 2025 GHI scores. With a score of 20.2, Uganda faces a level of hunger that is classified as serious, underscoring the urgent need for targeted interventions.

That’s why initiatives like our Feed the Hungry Program and Food Basket Projects are so vital. Through generous donor support, we provide essential food parcels to vulnerable families, delivering immediate relief and renewed hope.

Meet Mama Pamela, a 38-year-old widow and mother of four from Kitezi, a suburb of Kampala. Earlier this year, her family was struggling to meet basic needs.

The Challenge

The high cost of living, coupled with the lack of steady income from casual labor, often forced Pamela to skip meals so her children could eat. “Some days, we had only one small meal of porridge,” she recalls. “My youngest was always tired and sick—I feared for their health.” Malnutrition remains widespread in Uganda: 29% of children under the age of five are stunted, and 53% are anaemic, highlighting the critical need for support.

Broader Impact

Mama Pamela’s story is echoed across hundreds of households. Here’s the difference your support made in 2025:

  • Over 500 families reached with emergency food parcels in Kitui and surrounding counties
  • 2,500+ individuals provided with nutritious meals, including 160 children
  • 75% reduction in skipped meals among beneficiary families (post-distribution surveys)
  • 40% improvement in child energy levels and school attendance, helping break the cycle of poverty
  • In targeted communities, acute malnutrition rates dropped by an estimated 25% following distributions
  • Long-term benefits: Many families, like Mama Pamela’s, used the breathing room to start small income-generating activities, fostering self-reliance and economic stability

These outcomes align with broader evidence that targeted food aid not only saves lives but also improves health, education, and community resilience.
